Communication and Conflict Management for Researchers – Navigating difficult situations

Researchers face a variety of specialist, personal and organizational challenges. They need to fill a complex multiverse of role expectations while tackling diverse tasks in consideration of various organizational and content related specifications. This requires a permanent reflection of their own professional attitude, conflict management in awareness of the situation at hand and constructive conversation techniques even under difficult circumstances.

Participants can use the workshops to analyze and reflect questions concerning their individual conflict management behaviour especially regarding the hierarchic gender relations within the academic context.

The workshop will enable the participants to increase their skills and abilities in communication, conversation techniques, and conflict management. Participants are encouraged to include exemplary cases from their own professional context.

Difficult communication situations and conflict management can be experienced in specialized role plays and training exercises. Scenarios will include communication with supervisors, colleagues or staff. Supervised case reviews will help to develop long-term strategies and solution-oriented approaches for these conflict situations.

Time- and Self-Management during the PhD

A successful dissertation project depends not only on subject knowledge or research skills, but to a great extent also on self-motivation, time- and self-management.

In this workshop, you learn why the PhD throws such unexpected challenges at you. Why doing research can bring you to your limits and beyond. We reflect on the roots of widespread phenomena (procrastination, last-minute working, etc.) and start practising techniques that have helped many people before you. Topics like planning, setting priorities, getting started, staying motivated are part of the program. You also get 20 minutes to work on a task of your own choice following given rules, so please bring the corresponding material (like your laptop or an article).

You leave the workshop with clarity, new experiences, concrete options, and motivation to continue exploring the Time- and Self-Management topic.

Self-management and career planning

Many PhD students don`t know what they really would like to do after their PhD. They are not always clear on how to find their dream career and life – sometimes they can`t even believe that this could be possible.

In this workshop, I support you to find out what you really want (Life vision/navigation) and to identify your unique talents and potential.

You will receive input about typical barriers and self-management blockages and best practice tips on how to overcome the obstacles. We discuss conventional and unconventional career paths in science, industry or in the public sector so that you can find out which strategies are suitable just for you as an individual and are in good balance with your private interests.

After this course you will have a clear idea and a rough plan for the next steps to realize it, even taking into account the many unknown factors.

Project management

Project Management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet specific goals within a range of specific requirements and in a defined time frame. Plans and milestones provide a framework for action and increase the chance to meet this scope. Nonetheless, project managers and project teams have to face the challenge of constant change and often growing complexity. In international projects, they also have to address the intercultural context and often work as virtual teams.

The workshop will provide an overview of main principles and tools and aims to enable the participants to increase their skills and abilities in project knowledge. You will be encouraged to look forward leading own successful projects and to feel comfortable in using your skills, the tools and techniques.
